Baby Won't Sleep ? Here's Some Helpful Advice

Author: Chris Towland

Unless he is hungry, cold, or uncomfortable, it is normal that your newborn baby will spend at least 60% of his time asleep but you may also find that there are some occcasions, whatever you try to do, baby wont sleep.

It is important that your baby learn to distinguish between day and night. When it becomes dark outside, close the curtains and turn the lights very low. Dimmer switches may be useful to help you achieve this and they can be bought fairly cheaply. Make sure he is warm enough, and when he wakes during the night, if you decide to feed him then feed him relatively quickly and quietly without turning the lights up; Also be careful not to play with him or get him excited as this will make it more difficult for him to get back to sleep. In time, he'll learn the difference between a day and a nighttime feeding.

Your baby may fall asleep immediately after and sometimes during a feeding. He will probably be indifferent to noises such as doors shutting or the radio and in fact, may find certain noises soothing. Babies sleeping patterns do vary though, so if your baby is wakeful after a feeding, don't insist that he should stay in his crib. In fact, keeping him awake for a short time will often be beneficial to his sleep anyway.

You will probably find it easiest to let your baby sleep in something that makes him portable. During the day, a car seat with a carrying handle is ideal if you drive. If you don't have a car, a portable bassinet is suitable both day and night since it is easily movable; some types can be attached to a wheeled chassis to become a carriage. When he outgrows a bassinet he will need a proper crib. If you are trying to create a good daytime sleep routine though, it will always be best to let your baby sleep in his crib during the day whenever possible.

Sleeping With You: Some parents opt to have their newborn sleep with them because night feedings are easier to cope with. It shouldn't be a difficult habit to break after a couple of weeks. If you do sleep with your baby, there is little chance of rolling on top of him, but if you're worried you may prefer not to have him in your bed.

Maintain Temperature: Pay careful attention to the temperature of your baby's room. Babies cannot regulate their body temperature as well as adults. To maintain the right level of warmth they need a relatively constant temperature and enough blankets or sleeping clothes to keep them warm - but not too warm.

Sleeping Outdoors: Except when it's chilly your baby will normally sleep quite happily outdoors but make sure he's wrapped up and visible at all times and never place him in direct sunlight; choose a shady area or protect him with a canopy. If it is windy, put the hood up on the carriage or bassinet to act as a windbreak. A mesh net will protect him from insects if they are a problem in your locality.

Keep The Baby Comfortable: Your newborn will need to be changed often, and while he is sleeping he should wear something that gives you easy access to his diaper. An all-in-one stretch suit - one with a drawstring at the end so it doesn't ride up his back - can be very useful. It is important that your baby does not get too hot or too cold. In warm weather a diaper and an undershirt, t-shirt or vest will be sufficient.

In the winter, you can check that your baby is warm enough by touching the back of his neck with your hand. His skin should feel about the same temperature as yours. If he feels too hot and clammy, dress him in a lighter sleeper or remove a blanket.

Stimulate Sleep: Encourage your baby to sleep at night by tiring him out in the day with plenty of stimulation: talk to him, pick him up, and give him lots of different things to look at. If he wakes up a lot in the night because he is wet, use double diapers or diaper liners, and if he cries when you leave him, don't immediately return and pick him up. Rocking his cot, removing a blanket, or changing his position may be sufficient.

Early on, swaddling or wrapping your baby in a shawl or blanket may help him sleep; the sensation of being tightly enclosed gives babies a great feeling of security. It is also a useful way of calming a distressed baby.

To swaddle your baby, you need a shawl or small blanket. Fold the shawl in half to form a triangle and lay your baby on it, aligning his head with the longest edge. Then fold one point of the shawl across your baby and tuck it firmly behind his back. Do the same with the other point. Tuck the bottom of the shawl back underneath your baby's feet to keep them covered.

The close wrapping holds your baby's arms in a comfortable position that feels safe and secure and may also help him sleep longer. If his limbs move while he is asleep, he is less likely to wake if swaddled. Not all babies like swaddling and if yours doesn't, don't worry. It is safe to swaddle your baby in cold weather, but keep a check on her temperature by touching his skin. Unwrap him right away if he feels or looks too hot.

Top Ten Tips to Get your Baby Sleeping Better

Author: Tammy Hussin

Having a new baby is an incredibly exciting time, but it can also be filled with a great deal of anxiety. One major source of that anxiety is if you have a baby who isn't sleeping well. Sleep deprivation will quickly wear you down, and your baby will be exhausted and irritable as well. When this pattern goes on for months, a once happy little family can rapidly turn into a tired and cranky crowd.
Much of this angst can be eliminated by helping your baby learn to sleep independently. A baby who sleeps independently is usually a baby who sleeps through the night and takes nice, long naps on a consistent basis. Enabling your baby to learn how to sleep better should be a simple and gentle process, and most often your baby even have to shed a tear. This article will provide you with some important tips from the baby sleep book, Sleep Baby Sleep , and will help get you started on your way to having a better sleeping baby and a well-rested house.

#1 Establish a Consistent Nighttime Routine
One important aspect to getting your baby to sleep through the night is to have a consistent bedtime ritual. A solid evening routine will help your child understand that it is time for sleep when the routine is complete. A typical schedule might include a bath, some quiet time, a final feeding, and then a good-night kiss. Though your particular routine may vary, it is important make sure you have some kind of consistency at bedtime.

#2 Help your Baby Learn how to Fall Asleep Independently
Each time your baby is ready to sleep, no matter what time of day or night it is, you have a brand new opportunity to help your baby learn how to fall asleep without your help. If you try your hardest to seize each of these opportunities, your baby will be sleeping through the night sooner than you can believe. Keep in mind though that this is a process, and not an overnight miracle. Be consistent in your efforts and you will quickly teach your baby how to fall asleep without your help.

#3 Put your Baby to Sleep Awake
If you get only one idea from this article, it's that you need to try to put your baby to sleep while it is still awake. In other words, try to avoid having your baby fall asleep before you put him down. Be sure that your routine includes putting your baby in the crib or bassinet before it is asleep. If you put your baby to bed awake, it will more readily learn how to fall asleep without your help and your baby will sleep much better.

#4 Establish a Daytime Nap Routine
Sometimes figuring out a good daytime routine can be even more challenging than the one at bedtime. Out of sheer exhaustion and the desire to get a few minutes to yourself, you might be inclined to do absolutely anything to get your baby down for a nap. The problem with this is that your baby will begin to need that particular method in order to nap (for example, driving around, rocking, nursing, etc). You won't be happy if your baby can only take a nap in the car, or nap only if you lie down beside her, or only if you rock her to sleep. Instead, try to get your baby napping by falling asleep alone, and you're likely to wind up with a great little sleeper on your hands.

#5 The Family Bed – should you or shouldn't you?
A family bed is not a bad thing, and many families the world over would have it no other way. If it's something you want and have planned for, then by all means do it! On the other hand, if you have wound up with a family bed only because your baby cannot fall asleep any other way, then it might time to rethink your situation. A family bed could last for years, and if unwanted, often results in frustration and resentment and chronic sleep deprivation.

#6 Waking up Throughout the Night
Most, if not all, babies wake up several times throughout the night. Even a baby who is already sleeping through the night wakes up numerous times during the night. The key is that if your baby knows how to fall back to sleep on his own, it won't need you to put him back to sleep. So, don't rush in as soon as your baby wakes up in the middle of the night. Instead, give it some time and you might be pleasantly surprised to find that your baby falls back to sleep on his own.

#7 Getting Baby on a Schedule
Most people thrive on some sort of a schedule, and babies are no different. Your child is likely to function much better if it becomes familiar with the same events that happen throughout the day. If you get your baby on a schedule with a regular agenda, she will quickly figure out when it is time for sleep and will fall asleep much easier. Keep in mind though that everyone needs a little flexibility built into their life, so make sure that you are not too inflexible with your baby's daily routine.

#8 Avoid using Aids to Help your Baby Sleep
Many exhausted parents resort to external aids to get their babies sleeping (for example, constantly using a pacifier, driving your baby around, and rocking or nursing your baby to sleep). Though your baby might initially fall asleep quicker with these external aids, you are ultimately making your job much more difficult. The problem is that it helps you avoid teaching your baby how to fall asleep alone. Instead, take the time to get your baby falling asleep without any help, and it will fall asleep faster and sleep better.

#9 Be Consistent
The more regular you are in how you put your baby to sleep, the quicker and easier it will be for your child to learn how to sleep independently. No matter how tired you are, or how much you might be dreading the night ahead, a consistent effort will pay off quickly. Be patient with yourself, as it is not always easy to keep with your plan when you are intensely sleep deprived. Just be as consistent as possible, and you will see results.

#10 Take Time for Yourself
It's so easy to forget about yourself when you have a new baby. But playing the parent role 24/7, and having no time of your own could cause you to grow resentful and feel deprived. Instead, make a conscious effort to ensure that you get some time for yourself. You'll feel rejuvenated, happier, and you'll have more energy to devote to your family. You can and will be an amazing parent even though you get a little bit of downtime, and there's no better time to do it than when your baby is sleeping soundly. Enabling your baby to sleep independently is truly a priceless gift that you'll give to everyone under your roof. Your baby will be much happier if it is better rested, and so will you!

Music and Relaxation to Sleep Better

No matter rich or poor, old or young, man or woman, adult or child, no matter which cast, creed, race or color none of us can actually work properly without good night sleep. There are numbers of reasons of not getting good night sleep but most prominent are the ones, which are result of stress and tensions.

Heartburn, or drinking too much caffeine or alcohol is only other secondary reason of stress development and ultimately sleep disorder. Actually the quantity of sleep varies from person to person. On average human beings needs sleep for seven to eight hours per day.

But some may need lesser or even more. Being stress the basic and the only reason of sleep disorder, let's initially find out the reasons of stress. Stress could be because of concerns about work, school, health or family. This thinking activity can keep the mind too active and ultimately no source for relaxation.

Excessive boredom, prolonged illness can create stress. Depression can also led to stress. Basically depression is due to chemical imbalance in the brain and worries that accompany depression.

Music to relieve the stress
Sleep disorders caused due to stress has got the best remedy that is music. Many doctors and physiologists specifically state that Music could heal some vague problems concern to sleep.

Music can help an individual in various ways. It relieves stress; controls emotional responses; improves productivity; and can increase intellectual prowess. Music relieves stress in following ways:

1. Providing a predictable and secure environment by facilitating mental comfort.

2. Inducing feelings of well being in one self.

3. Decreasing physical mechanism, such as heart rate and respiration by calming.

4. Inducing first and then maintaining the relaxation once it occurs.

5. It brings the chaotic situations to order.

6. It helps to provide a break from frenetic activity.

7. Helps emotionally by putting enjoyment to life.

8. Helps to change mood from blue or blah to more upbeat.

9. Provides common grounds through shared music preferences

10. It helps to foster feelings of comfort and familiarity

11. Improves productivity by stimulating physical responses that results in feelings of more energy.

Importance of relaxation for sleep:
Relaxation is an important aspect in our lives as it helps to keep the stress levels down, and consequently improves health. Over work and deprivation can result in mental health problems, memory failure and even heart attack. Hence it's very much important for everybody to take at least 10 minutes a day to wind down.

Sleepless nights can be terrible when one's mind is buzzing with information and one desperately needs to sleep. Relaxation can greatly help one switch off so that one will be asleep within seconds. However there are many of us who finds it extremely hard to actually relax.

Some of the common hindrances that obstruct the path are not having enough time or mind wandering during relaxing. However, relaxation and sleep are of equal importance as both of them helps the body to function properly.

How to relax:
The feeling of relaxation is very is a simple practice and almost anyone can acquire it to relieve the stress and tension that stands between an individual and a richer and healthier life.

For quick relaxation meditation is an extremely helpful technique that works greatly. However, meditation only happens when the body reaches an amazing degree of maturity and after great effort has been made both in the physical and mental realms. It also helps in releasing muscular and mental tension accumulated in everyday life, leading to serenity and providing a glimpse of the enlightenment state, a state of constant awareness and meditation.

Other methods to achieve a deeper sense of relaxation are through breathing. In the real sense of the term breathing implies cosmic consciousness and the life force emanating from it through the medium of the will. Breadth is the chord that ties the soul to the body and whenever it ceases the body is just an inanimate corps and the nervous system no longer works and the mind is extinguished.

However it is vital to breathe in pure, refreshing air, then it is also essential that we should take in only pure, positive, and loving thoughts and emotions into our beings.
