Working From Home

Many companies are now making it possible for some of their
employees to
work from home
rather than working in the office.
Working from home
can be very beneficial especially for the employee who has young
children still at home. Some of the benefits of working from home
include saving on gas, saving on child care or after school care
expenses, and being able to get your work done even if you have a
child home sick from school, just to name a few.
Working from home
is not always as easy as it sounds though. In order to work from
home you need to have a home office set up to accommodate all of
your working needs. This includes a computer, computer desk and
chair, a separate phone line from your home phone to use for
business purposes, a fax machine for anything that needs to be faxed
into work, and a printer for anything you need to print off and take
back into the office.
Your
home office
needs to be private and quiet so that you have little or no
distraction from your family, and also be private and quiet so that
your work doesn't become a distraction to your family. If your job
demands discretion then it would be a good idea to make a family
rule that no one is allowed in your office while your are working.
Most of the time,
working from home
gives you the opportunity to work flexible hours rather than a set
schedule, but you need to make sure that you don't take this freedom
for granted or your work might start to suffer, and this will not be
acceptable to your boss. Try to maintain a somewhat set work
schedule. This might take some practice but it can be done. If you
are supposed to work at least eight hours a day, try working four
hours, then take a break and finish up working the last four hours.
If you are
working from home,
try to keep a time record of the hours you work each day. Keep track
of any breaks you might take as well as any overtime you might work.
Turn this into your boss at the end of each week to show them how
you manage your time while
working at home.
This allows them to see whether or not working at home is a good
business decision for you, as well as showing you any improvements
you might want to make on your time management.
Lastly, if you are
working from home,
make sure that your friends and family members know your work hours
so that you will not get constant work disruption from a ringing
phone or someone dropping by unannounced for a visit.
